what do you fear?

Superstition

Why do we fear things that are unknown such as numbers with three 6s or Friday the 13th? These things are all tied in with superstition. Superstition is based on whether or not we want to acknowledge what the other person is saying and is defined as a belief that has nothing to do with knowledge or reason. Superstition is often applied to luck, characters, and even prophecies such as 2012.

Friday the 13th

Picture
To some, Friday the 13th is regarded as the event surrounded with the most superstition out of all the others. It is a day that most people in our society regards as unlucky whereas events on this day are meant to go wrong. Fear of this day even causes people to not perform normal everyday activities. In the United Kingdom, a study shows that in comparison to other Fridays, fewer people chose to drive their cars on Friday the 13th than any other day. Superstition of the number 13 has even escalated to a national level whereas streets with number 13 have been removed in cities and buildings. The question we may be asking, however, is what are the origins of this day, and what makes it so infamous? Well, the number 13 has always been a number that people fear due to credulous sayings, and because of that, we need to look deeper into the number 13.

The number 13 is largely associated with religion, as well as many bad events, legends, and rumors. For example, one urban legend is that if 13 people sit down together at a dinner table, one of them will die within the next year. This is legend comes from none other than Christianity. We all know Jesus, the last supper, and his crucifixion. It was said that Judas was the 13th member of the feast to attend it who so happens to be the betrayer of Jesus. It is also said that Jesus was crucified on a Friday, adding onto the Friday the 13th superstition. It is also said that those who have thirteen letters in their name have devils luck. The Knight's Templar were a brave group of warrior monks fighting Islam in the Crusades. Their total annihilation was on Friday the 13th as well. So is the number 13 and the day Friday really an unlucky day, or is it just by some random chance that bad things occur on that one day? It is not certain, however, what is certain is that superstition has kept these beliefs alive for a very, very long time.
(Unlucky #13 + Unlucky Friday = More Misfortune?)

The End of the World Superstition - 2012

Picture
The question, "when will the world end?", has been one of history's most mysterious and commonly asked questions. Since it is a superstition, we can't really say for sure when it will happen and neither what will happen, however, there are many theories describing the two questions.

The Mayan Calender: Most people think today that the Mayans "predicts" that the world will end in 2012, but it really isn't like that. Yes, the Mayans are known for predicting events, but they didn't actually say, "THE WORLD WILL END IN 2012 GUYS!". No, it just so happens that their calender ends in the year 2012, thus, making people believe that since their calender ends on that year, so will the world. Its just of a matter of a superstition spawning more superstition.

Planet X/ Niribu:  The Planet X/ Niribu theory is basically this. It isn't just a large comet crashing into ours. It's simply a planet coming so close to Earth that it causes the polar axis to shift. This would cause sever weather and climate changes such as tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and other disasters. It is said that this comet is larger than Jupiter! Well, this may not be so convincing, but the right people to ask whether this is true or not is NASA.

Comet Collision: It has happened before, and it could happen again. Is it likely? Chances of a large comet colliding with Earth are very slim. So lets say it is going to happen. Well good news, engineers are currently developing nuclear warheads meant to destroy comets of a high magnitude

Nuclear Warheads: While some countries have peacefully put down nuclear arms while others still cling onto them, as long as two countries have a nuclear warhead, the world is at stake. If 2 countries were to nuke each other, it would cause a chain of events that would either result in the extinction of our species or in a massive amount of deaths. If we were to survive a nuclear bombing, then the survivors would suffer from many problems such as radiation causing cancer and more.
